This Temple is said to be older than the Palani murugan temple.The main deities are Godess Periyanayaki,Kailasanathar With Lord Murugan in the center.This form of Lord murugan seated in the center with Lord shiva in the right and ambal in the left is called somaskandar.This is the temple formed as somaskandar principle.

This temple is known as Periyanayaki temple or oor Kovil or yaanai kovil.While entering we can see a very spacious pillar mandapam(constructed with black stone,Many of the sculpture are made using single stone) with various sculptures denoting tradition and carving of kings who constructed the temple(this temple is constructed by various kings). This temple doesn’t have rajagopuram so on entering mottai gopuram ,right side the main deity Periyanayaki amman ,Center Muthukumaraswamy with valli deivanai,Left side Kailasanathar(siva) as main deity.There are many parivara idols around the temple.In this temple flag hoisting “Dwaja Roohanam”happens for all the festivals conducted in palani.The Temple owns a Very beautiful Silver Chariot which is noted to watch during festival times.During kandashasti Lord Muruga of palani hills comes down for soorasamharam and goes up.This temple is very famous for all traditional poojas held every month.The Kolattam pooja is very popular.Kasturi Elephant is maintained as Temple Elephant.This Temple is said to be very powerful.
